The seafarers are one of the largest pillars and are standing at the forefront of this rapidly transforming industry. Over the past 28 years, I have seen this industry evolve into its better version each time. Currently, the global maritime industry is focused on achieving sustainable goals, that require decarbonization.

We are embarking on a journey towards a greener, more sustainable maritime sector, where seafarers find themselves at the forefront of change. I believe that in this evolving landscape, seafarers must equip themselves with a unique set of skills and adapt to new technologies, regulations, and environmental challenges.

A Changing Scenario in the Maritime Industry

I got associated with the maritime industry two decades ago. During my initial days in this industry, the primary focus was delivering cargo and ensuring the safety of the entire ship and the crew.

Have you ever wondered what drives the sustainable shipping revolution? It is particularly driven by the urgent need to reduce the industry’s environmental footprint. The pressure on maritime stakeholders to decarbonize activities is growing as global emissions rise. Almost 2.8% of the world’s CO2 emissions are attributed to shipping, according to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), and this percentage is expected to rise unless immediate action is taken.

Skills to focus on

In this era of environmental consciousness, seafarers must acquire a diverse skill set to navigate the Sustainable Shipping Revolution effectively. I will discuss some of the important skills that seafarers need to develop in order to navigate the sustainable shipping revolution.

1. Sustainable literacy: First and foremost, it is essential to comprehend how shipping affects the environment. Emission reduction techniques, ballast water management techniques, and the significance of protecting marine ecosystems are all ideas that seafarers should be aware of.

If you are a seafarer, you need to understand how your actions affect the oceans, from the tiniest plankton to the biggest whales. Always remember that your single action towards sustainability makes a difference in the maritime industry.

2. Technological proficiency: Modern ships are outfitted with a variety of cutting-edge technologies, including automated navigation systems and fuel-efficient engines. To maximize effectiveness and reduce environmental impact, seafarers must feel comfortable using and troubleshooting these technologies.

You have to be proficient in the advanced technologies that are used in maritime operations. It will help in enhancing the performance and the precision of the operations. As technology is advancing, the number of issues like cyber risk are increasing. Therefore, as a seafarer, you have to have the capability of overcoming the technological barriers.

3. Emergency and Safety Response: In the maritime sector, safety is still of utmost importance. Seafarers, however, also need to be ready for fresh difficulties, such as responding to mishaps using alternate fuels or navigating through alterations in weather patterns brought on by climate change. You have to be fully aware of your surroundings and follow sustainable measures that help in reducing environmental issues.

4. Adherence to Regulations: The regulatory environment affecting the maritime sector is rapidly changing. Regulations governing emissions, waste disposal, and environmental protection at the national, regional, and international levels must be kept current by seafarers.

Personal Reflections

From my personal experience, I can say that the maritime industry is not stagnant. Just like the industry, the seafarers also have to keep themselves updated. These skills are extremely beneficial to adopt, especially for a positive transformation.

I’ve seen the increased focus on sustainability over the years, and it’s obvious that our industry is going through a significant change. The Sustainable Shipping Revolution is a personal journey for every seafarer, not just an industry-wide movement.

According to me, making a difference in the environment is one of the most rewarding components of this transition. We are now guardians of the oceans rather than just carriers of cargo. Every choice we make, from streamlining travel plans to cutting waste, has an impact on the condition of our oceans.

However, dealing with these developments has not been without its difficulties. Resilience and tenacity were required to learn how to use new technologies, comprehend complex rules, and handle the added duties related to sustainability.

My mentors have always taught me that continuously upgrading skills and knowledge is beneficial for both personal and professional growth. I believe that there is always more to learn. In addition, I also strongly support knowledge sharing. As a result, I have started taking training sessions for young seafarers who want to make a change in the rapidly transforming maritime industry.

As a mentor, I encourage my students regarding the sustainable shipping revolution, which is not a destination but a continuous journey.
